Let’s get controversial! I’m spilling the tea! If you’ve been following the news lately, some state are talking of reopening soon…like within a couple of days soon!
There is nothing that I can say or do that will change when my state will reopen so I’m taking matters into my own hands. Practicing social distancing and stay home (unless I have to get essentials) will not stop for me. Here’s why:
COVID-19 is a silent killer.
It is deadly to my race: African American. Last month, I was following the stats of the number of deaths in Louisiana (my home state) based of race and chronic condition complications. 73% of deaths occurred in African Americans and the number one complication that caused death was hypertension, followed by diabetes.
Diabetes runs in my family. My grandfather died from complications from diabetes. I was diagnosed insulin resistant in 2013 and rediagnosed again at the end of 2019. I started having issues with my blood pressure when I found out I was pregnant and every now and then it spike up. Reading those statistics broke my heart.
The thought of getting this novel virus SCARES me because the statistics aren’t looking great just because of MY genetics. The most I can do is limit my interaction with people and pray that my family and I are protected. It is scary going out everyday not knowing that you could come into contact with someone who is carrying the virus asymptomatically. It’s scary not knowing how your body will react. People are suffering and dying alone.
So when the state reopens, I hope that people will still stay home for the safety of others. Some of our loved ones are first responders and healthcare providers and the last thing they need or even want is another wave of virus just because people wanted to go outside. I am so tired of being home but I will continue to stay in for the safety of the ones I love! Protect yourself and protect your family. Stay home!
